QuickBooks SimpleStart – lets you track the basics - money in and money out. You can create Estimates and Invoices for customers and write checks (but cannot enter bills). Reports are basic. SimpleStart does not work with inventory, payroll, or allow multi-user access.
QuickBooks Pro – is the most popular accounting software. Not only can you create estimates and invoices, but you can enter/pay bills, work with basic Inventory, payroll, and allow multiple users (up to 5). to have access. There is a wide variety of customizable reports.
QuickBooks Premier – Similar to QuickBooks Pro, but offers industry-specific editions for contractors, professional service firms, wholesalers/distributors, retailers and non profit organizations Depending on the industry, features include Sales Orders (helps track shipments and backorders), billing rates for employees and vendors (sub-contractors), Units of Measure (e.g. buy by case, sell by individual unit) conversions, and numerous industry specific reports for. Has built-in forecasting and business plan tools. Allows up to 5 simultaneous users.
QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions - the most powerful edition of QuickBooks. Like Premier, Enterprise Solutions has 5 specific industry editions (contractors, retailers, professional service firms, wholesalers/distributors, and non profit organizations). Businesses usually consider Enterprise Solutions when they have one or more of these needs/issues: more users (version 9.0 supports up to 30 users), much tighter user access control, larger lists (customers, vendors, items/parts/services), annual sales exceeding one million. Other features in Enterprise Solutions include the ability to run combined financial reports for multiple companies, the Intuit Statement Writer (gives you more control on how financial statements appear), an employee organizer (which provides additional fields and reports, regulation guides for recruiting, compensation and more), and integration with other business solutions such as EDI, Field Service, Warehouse Management.
QuickBooks Online - is a web-hosted application somewhere between SimpleStart and Pro in its available features. Includes payroll, Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable. Reports are much better than SimpleStart, but not as good or customizable as Pro. Cannot do job costing. Its selling feature is the anytime, anywhere access (although remote access has improved so there may be other options that provide remote access yet let you use the more powerful desktop QuickBooks programs). No software to install (and you’re always in the most recent edition), no servers to maintain and Intuit handles the backups of your company file(s). (Macintosh is not supported).
